Ernest L. Haynes Obituary (2024)

Ernest Larry Haynes passed away on April 16, 2024 in San Marcos Texas. A wordsmith by trade, Ernest had a love and a mastery of the English language that was incisive, always direct, and usually entertaining. Ernest was born in Dayton, Texas but raised in nearby Kenefick. His passion for knowledge and reading was evident at a young age, as he had read the entire encyclopedia before he was a teenager. He graduated as an honor student from Dayton High School, and then earned a degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in English and Education. Ernest returned to his hometown for a job teaching English at Dayton High School. After 2 years of teaching, he accepted an offer as an advertising copywriter in Houston which would become his long term residence. At the age of 27, he established his own advertising agency, where he enjoyed tremendous success from 1973 to 2010. He spent his retirement years doting on his wife Sara, rescuing Catahoula hounds, perfecting his craft in the kitchen and BBQ pit and working tirelessly with the Friends of Bill W. helping others stay sober. Ernest and Sara were longtime parishioners of Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral in Houston. Ernest was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years Sara McGaughran Haynes, his beloved mother Minnie Myrick Haynes, father Herschel Samuel Haynes, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by many children and grandchildren.
