Gustavo "Ned" Arcides Obituary (2024)

Our beloved Gustavo “NED” Arcides, age 85, resident of Kyle, Texas was called by our Heavenly Father on Monday, September 23, 2024. Gustavo is preceded in death by his parents: Gustavo & Cruz Arcides. Ned was born in Fort Stockton, Texas on July 27, 1939, the eldest of three brothers. Ned had the spirit of an athlete in all that he set his hand to and began his lifelong passion for sports on Fort Stockton High School’s football, baseball, and basketball teams. Until the time of his illness, Ned was devoted to physical fitness in the gym and as a distance runner and cyclist, even as a successful three-time participant in Wichita Falls’ renown “Hotter than Hell” endurance cycling competition. Following his High School years, Ned enlisted in the United States Air Force where he proudly served his beloved country for 6 years. During Ned’s enlistment, he had the distinction of having marched in the 1961 Presidential inaugural parade of John F. Kennedy. When his time in the USAF came to a close, Ned immediately and eagerly joined the workforce. His gainful employment included General Dynamics in California and culminated in a twenty-six year career with the State of Texas Comptroller’s Office. Ned, always a friend to strangers, enjoyed people and frequently expressed this with his gift of encouragement and dialogue, mingled with a true wit, charm, humor and genuine interest. Always a curious lifelong-learner and prolific reader, Ned was also a persistent encourager and a vocal proponent of literacy and education and he himself attended UCLA. Ned was a well-known friend to many and a sought-out figure for civic engagement in both State and local politics, frequently urging friends and family to make their voices known through voting and community involvement. Ned distinctively served in Kyle, Texas as a Board Member for The Friends of the Kyle Library and the Hays County Emergency Services Department, which governs the Kyle Fire Department. Ned, a cancer survivor, was an example of strength and encouragement to his family and friends of perseverance in the face of hardship. His love of people and his curiosity of the human experience serve as the hallmarks of Ned’s life. His love and these enduring qualities will be greatly missed and always remembered by his loving wife, Maria, his children, family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 29yrs.: Maria Villanueva; daughters: Kristina Bealand (Christopher), Stephanie McPhee (Sean), Cindy Bond (Bob), Celeste Abbott, Rebecca Morgan and Deborah Ramirez; brothers: Reynaldo Arcides and Raymundo Arcides; grandchildren: 27; great grandchildren: numerous; and with numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. Visitation will begin at 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2024 with a Prayer Service beginning at 10:00a.m., at Los Angeles Funeral Home ... 300 Cheatham St. ... San Marcos, Texas. Pastor Samuel Montoya will officiate. Interment to follow at Memory Lawn Memorial Park in Martindale, Texas. Full Military Honors will be conducted by DAV, Disabled American Veterans. Serving as Pallbearers: Daniel Barron, Joel Garza, Ray Bryant, Daniel Del Cueto, Sean McPhee, Christopher Bealand and Ulric Arcides.
