Obituary of Maria Diaz

Maria Andrea Arredondo Diaz, “Nana”, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on September 23, 2019.

Maria was born to Antonio Arredondo and Angela Mendez on November 30. 1930 in the town of Muzquiz in Coahuila, Mexico. She grew up in Monterrey and moved to the United States in 1968 as a young woman where she would marry Sr. Carranco and later John R. Diaz.  She was married to him until his death in 1995. In her prime, Nana enjoyed baking – famous for her empanadas, buenuelos, and lemon meringue pies – and going to bingos and playing the lottery. She had the buena suerte to win often!  She was self-employed well into her 70s, caring for a number of children but was most proud to have had the opportunity to care for her grandchildren and great grandchild when they were young.

Maria is survived by her brothers and sisters: Lupe Arredondo Mendez, Maria de los Angeles Arredondo Mendez, Petra Arredondo Mendez, Abel Arredondo Mendez, and Miguel Arredondo Mendez, of Mexico; her step-children: Beatrice Arredondo Diaz of Kyle, TX and John Arredondo Diaz (Mary) of San Marcos, TX; her grandchildren: Tammy Boddy (Troy) of Kyle, TX, Cindy Ann Diaz (Robin) of San Marcos, TX, Lisa Tenorio Truppa (Tony) of Dallas, TX and Yolanda Marie Muzquiz (Julio) of Austin, TX; and by her great grandchild, Matthew John Boddy of Kyle, TX. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husbands, Sr. Carranco and John Diaz.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m.- 9:00pm, Thursday, September 26, 2019 at the Los Angeles Funeral Home, 300 Cheatham St., San Marcos, Texas. with Recitation of Holy Rosary held at 7:00 p.m.,  . Private Memorial Service will be conducted at a later date.

In her later years, Maria was diagnosed with dementia.  It is for that reason that the family asks for donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers.
