Obituary of Tirso Torres

Mr. Tirso Torres, 87, son of the late Gabriel and Ruperta Torres, passed to eternal life on Wednesday, June 15, at his home on Saltillo Street, surrounded by grace, prayer, and his family near his side. Mr. Torres was preceded in death by his parents Gabriel and Ruperta; his loving wife, Olivia; sisters Rosa Torres Barron and Rose Torres; brother Lorenzo Torres, and son-in-law Robert Gomez, Sr. Born January 27, 1935, in Hunter, Texas (La Mota), Mr. Torres grew up in a family of migrant workers, who annually packed their belongings and traveled with their children, to follow agricultural work in Colorado and South Texas. Working in the fields and harvesting crops was the way of life for the young boy and his siblings from an early age. But they returned to San Marcos every year to resume their schooling and with renewed dedication to their education. Mr. Torres was proudest when he earned his high school GED certificate and later attended Nixon Clay Business College, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Accounting. He was also a man driven by his faith and devotion to his family and to God. He was a devoted parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and served as president of the Holy Name Society, remaining active in many church activities, throughout his lifetime. He also served on the San Pedro Cemetery Committee, working with family members to preserve the heritage and history of these sacred burial grounds. Mr. Torres was the epitome of hard work, a trait learned in childhood that served him well throughout his life. He worked for Wide-Lite Manufacturing, where he was a union steward for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 520 post; Lockheed Martin; and, Ferguson Plumbing Supply, retiring at the age of 74. If you knew him, he never stopped working. He would clock out of his full-time job to head home to his other full-time work, his beautiful family. He loved sports and coached his kids’ little league teams and played in local, men’s softball leagues. Most evenings, he could be found doing home repairs, washing his cars, or simply tinkering with his many, outdoor toys. Mr. Torres met the love of his life, Olivia Rodriguez Torres, in San Marcos, in the summer of 1955. He knew immediately she was the one, and 6 months later on January 28, 1956, they surprised everyone in their families and secretly eloped. They were married 57 years and their union was blessed with beautiful children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He is survived by his children: Julie Torres Gomez, Tirso Torres Jr., Albert Torres, John Torres (Connie) and Norma Jean Anderson; grandchildren: Robert Gomez (Rita), John Torres (Alexx), Cecilia Mendez (Frank), Valerie Gomez, Brian Torres, Nick Torres (Ruby), J.C. Anderson (Ashley), Justin Torres, Jarrett Anderson, and Andrew Anderson; great grandchildren: Mia Gomez, Jamie Gomez, Kyrie Anderson, Olivia Anderson, Kailin Torres, Austin Torres and Caleb Torres. He is also survived by and remained close to his sisters Amelia Torres Cruz (Gilbert), Frances Torres Castillo (Manuel) and Dominga Torres Martinez (Richard) and their descendants -- devoted nieces, nephews, cousins; extended family in Roswell, NM and close friends.
